Beyond the Slopes | Winter Activities | 5 on Friday
We all know that there is great skiing and boarding in Colorado – but there are a ton of great things to do “beyond the slopes” as well – here are our favorite 5 (with a bit of help from Colorado.com):1. Ice Skating
Colorado has a number of great outdoor ice skating rinks. For an urban setting, visit the rinks in Fort Collins, Boulder, or the tiny rink in Cherry Creek. For a more mountainous venue, our favorite is the 40-acre Evergreen Lake
2. Sleigh Rides
How about taking in a sleigh ride? Enjoy the crisp, winter air and the gentle jingle of bells tinkling to the rhythmic stride of strapping horses all while cozied up under a warm blanket!
Bundle up and head for the hills (or your favorite local sledding and tubing terrain). Some of the resorts even have lifts and tow ropes to get you to the top of even bigger hills (Vail, Keystone, Steamboat, and Copper are especially fun).
Whether you have a great local park, golf course or want to head up to our favorite shoeing location, Rocky Mountain National Park, if you haven’t tried snowshoeing you are missing out! In RMNP, they maintain dozens of trails – just pick up a trail map from a ranger station or join a ranger-led group tour. The Brainard Lake area west of Boulder also offers an array of well-marked trails, as do the state’s many ski towns.
5. Dog Sledding
YES….we said dog sledding. It is fast becoming a popular Colorado adventure in snowy mountain towns like Snowmass, Breckenridge, Winter Park, Steamboat Springs, and Telluride.
